5-MINUTES WITH DR KAM...

If you follow us on social media, you'll already know that last week, we announced our collaboration with Dr Kam, our new Doctor. Dr Kam prides himself on his attention to detail, and his ability to offer each client a completely bespoke and relaxing cosmetic experience. Based in our flagship Flint+Flint Mailbox clinic, Dr Kam offers a huge variety of cosmetic treatments; from anti-wrinkle injections to dermal fillers. We met up with Dr Kam and quizzed him on your most-asked cosmetic questions! Keep reading to have your questions answered...

What makes BOTOX® and Juvéderm® different from other products?
The extent of the research behind the products puts them ahead - for example, Botox has over 3000 scientific research articles related to its use and almost 500 aesthetic articles! Allergen has 20 years of manufacturing experience in the toxin sector, 36 years of manufacturing experience in the filler sector and are currently the no1 brand in injectables globally.

What treatment do you love performing the most?
I enjoy treating Tear Troughs and restoring cheeks the most. I feel this has an instant rejuvenating effect on the face and the clients are so pleased with the result as soon as they leave the clinic room. A close second is a non-surgical rhinoplasty - as you can imagine, some clients have hated their nose for years but have been reluctant to go under the knife for a variety of reasons. So when you can offer them a 10-minute procedure to improve an area of their face they have not like for years, they often leave absolutely beaming with joy.

What raised your interest in Aesthetic treatments?
As a GP, I missed the hands-on aspects of surgery (as I had done ENT surgery as a job and I absolutely loved it!). I am trained in minor surgery and joint injections, but I wanted to do more. A good friend of mine urged me to join her on a basic aesthetics course a few years ago and I haven't looked back since! Since then, I felt I wanted a qualification in Aesthetic Medicine that shows that I have more experience than 'a weekend course', hence I signed up to attain the Level 7 Diploma. MY aim to treat the face as a whole, rather than 'line-chasing' and to preserve natural expression. Hence, my personal motto is we help you 'be the best you'.

What should clients look for and check for in an injector?
They should ensure they are going to an injector from a healthcare background (doctor, dentist, senior nurse) as this group has a knowledge of key anatomy and how to deal with complications. Also, they should check the injector's qualifications and how long they have been working in aesthetics - for example, being a dentist for 20 years does not mean that experience carries over into aesthetics. It is a different field entirely. Ideally, clients should have a portfolio of work that they can browse prior to making their decision to see if the injector is a 'good fit' for them.

How does BOTOX® work and what are the side effects?
Botox works by stopping the signal going from the nerve telling the muscle to contract. The body is made to adapt, however, therefore after approx 4 months the nerve sprouts new endings that bypassed the blocked ones to re-start the signalling which then enables the muscle to regain movement.
If used in the right location and in the right dosage - there are little to no side effects.
As with any needle procedure, there is a risk of bleeding, bruising and infection. We minimise these risks with meticulous skin preparation and expert technique.
There are location-specific side effects, for example when treating the frown lines, if the injections are too low, the Botox can diffuse into the muscle affecting the eyelid and hence make it droop. This is temporary and we can give eye drops to counter-act this.

What are Dermal Fillers, how do they work and what are the side effects?
These are a gel-like product made of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a substance naturally found in the human body, but there is less and less found in the skin as we age. We can use fillers to help rejuvenate areas (such as the tear trough), restore lost volume (such as the cheeks) or actually re-shape a facial feature (such as a non-surgical rhinoplasty). The fillers we use are not permanent and are actually fully reversible if you do not like the final outcome. Depending on the area treated, the fillers can last from 6-18 months.
