ARE E-CIGARETTES DAMAGING YOUR SKIN'S HEALTH?

For anyone who uses e-cigarettes they could be causing as much damage to your skin health as smokers who smoke traditional tobacco cigarettes, according to a study published in Annals of plastic surgery.

Chemists at the university of Connecticut found that e-cigarettes being filled with nicotine-based liquid could be as poisonous as unfiltered cigarettes when it comes to damaging DNA of the skin and affecting tissue oxygen levels. Using a rat skin flap model the researchers examined the microcirculatory effects (the circulation of the blood in the smallest blood vessels within organ tissues) e-cigarettes could have in comparison to traditional tobacco cigarettes. 58 rats were randomly exposed to room air, tobacco cigarette smoke, medium-nicotine content (1.2%) e-cigarette vapour and high- nicotine content (2.4%) e-cigarette vapour.

After 5 weeks, plasma was taken and collected from their skin and was tested for nicotine and cotine (a chemical compound found in tobacco) levels. The study concluded that both the high and medium nicotine content in the e-cigarette exposure groups caused very similar amounts to necrosis and tissue oxygen deficiency when compared with the traditional tobacco cigarette group.

The reason for premature aging of skin and hair in smokers is the nicotine content in cigarettes. Nicotine constricts veins, meaning less blood reaches extremities such as skin and hair follicles. This means skin and hair are not receiving the essential nutrients and oxygen they require to stay healthy, resulting in more rapid decline. Nicotine will cause skin to sag and wrinkle prematurely, hair to become thin and brittle, and give an overall effect of premature aging. Since e-cigarettes contain a high quantity of nicotine, e-cigarettes also cause premature aging.
